Left Upper Acute Abdominal Pain

By Patricia | August 24, 2009

Your pain could be caused by many medical conditions. The upper left abdominal area has several critical organs, including the spleen, pancreas, part of the large intestine and stomach, your left kidney, and part of your lungs. In addition, the heart is close too. If your pain is internal, it could arise from any of these organs, or it could be an external pain linked to the muscles over the abdominal region. The pain itself could be sharp and stabbing, or a slower ache. Please visit a physician at the earliest to further explain your exact symptoms and narrow down the root cause of the pain.

If you are experiencing pain associated with vomiting and fever, it could be a case of food poisoning. These symptoms usually show within 48 hours of a suspect meal. If you think that this may be the cause, do not consume any additional food and visit your doctor immediately. Other common reasons for pain in the upper left abdomen include excess wind in the large intestine or an excess of acidity in your stomach. These can be addressed by any over-the-counter antacids. If your pains are mild, you can try some home remedies and see if they relieve the symptoms. Dip a clean cloth in hot water and place it over your abdomen for topical relief. You can also relax in a hot bath with some scented natural oils like teat tree oil or eucalyptus oil. If possible, get a warm water enema to clear your bowels.

Try to avoid solid food for at least half a day and have a lot of water and fluids. For the next couple of days, avoid fried or high-fat foods, strong spices, citrus foods, tomato-based products, caffeine, and alcohol. Make sure your meals are well balanced and high in fiber for smooth bowel movements. You can try a cooling, soothing snack of yogurt with some turmeric powder. The antiseptic properties of turmeric will help in case you have a mild stomach infection. Some lemon tea with honey will also provide relief. In addition, have a teaspoon of olive oil in the morning. This should help in case of trapped wind or heartburn. Some people have also reported good results by rubbing olive oil mixed with peppermint oil on the stomach. Keep a record of any feelings of nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, or fever. If your pain does not subside for 2-3 days, you will need to visit your doctor who will require these details for an accurate diagnosis.
