Why My Thigh Or Groin Get Itchy And Chapped

Itchiness and discomfort around the groin and inner thigh area is characteristic of a condition known as jock itch. The medical name for jock itch is tinea cruris. Jock itch results due to a fungal infection of the skin. The fungus trichophyton rubrum usually breeds in warm and damp areas of the body such as the groin, thighs, genitals and buttocks. This is not a harmful or very serious condition; however it can cause significant discomfort to the individual due to the intense itching it results in. Itching and scratching the area only serves to make it worse as it can trigger further infection. The symptoms tend to get aggravated in individuals who sweat excessively and those who are overweight.

Irritation and chapping around the inner thigh and groin area can also occur due to friction between the clothes and the skin of that area. Continued rubbing of the skin can cause redness, itching and tenderness. In case, jock itch is already present, such constant friction can worsen the symptoms. For discomfort caused by both jock itch and friction of the skin, proper hygiene of the area is very important. The skin must also be kept dry at all times so that sweat and dirt do not accumulate.

Treatments

Individuals affected with jock itch must avoid wearing undergarments and clothes that are too tight. Dampness and moistness provide an ideal environment for bacteria, and as such it is advisable to wear clothes made of cotton as these will absorb sweat. Jock itch is a contagious infection and hence one must avoid sharing personal items such as clothes and towels with other individuals. Clothes must also be washed regularly in warm water after use. If possible, undergarments must be changed twice daily. Infections can also become worse due to intake of foods such as carbohydrates, sugar and processed products. Improve your immune system by consuming plenty of fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables. Maintain good hygiene by cleaning the affected areas with an antibacterial soap. Dry the groin and inner thigh areas thoroughly before wearing clothes. Make sure that you dab the area dry and not be very harsh in the process as the friction could worsen the situation. You can also apply some tea tree oil or apple cider vinegar to the itchy areas after drying. This will help to reduce irritation and curb the infection. A paste of garlic and honey may be applied to affected areas as well. Soaking in a bath of salt water is very effective in providing relief from any infection. In case the symptoms become severe, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
