Treating Hyper Pigmentation With Lemon Juice

By Patricia | October 6, 2009

Hyper pigmentation of the skin is extremely common and it usually causes dark patches of skin in comparison to the rest of the body. People are often embarrassed because of these dark patches of skin. There are many factors that cause this form of pigmentation, constant exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun being the most common reason. There is also the possibility of an excess of melanin in the body that gives rise to this disorder. Areas of the skin that have these excessive quantities of melanin tend to tan more easily than the rest of the body, thereby leading to the formation of dark patches. Another symptom of hyper pigmentation of the skin is the formation of freckles. This condition is more of a cosmetic problem than a health issue and there are measures that can be taken to avoid the spread of the darkened patches over the rest of the body.

Because of their constant exposure to the sun, parts of the body such as the hands and the face are more prone to hyper pigmentation. The melanin in the body absorbs the ultra violet rays of the sun to protect the body and therefore, the hands and the face are at an increased risk of hyper pigmentation. The lips have a very thin layer of skin that protects them, thereby leaving them more exposed to the ultra violet rays than any other part of the body. Hormonal changes also play their own part in hyper pigmentation and the formation of dark patches.

Home Remedies

Protecting yourself by staying out of the sun is a good way to avoid hyper pigmentation. However, this is not always possible. Hence, using a lip gloss and sunscreen lotion with a high sun protection factor is another useful means of ensuring that the skin stays protected. Applying a layer of lemon juice to the affected area will help to reduce pigmentation as lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent. A face mask made with a tablespoon of gram flour, half a teaspoon of turmeric powder and milk cream will lighten the skin and nourish it. Rubbing off this mixture gently, when it is completely dry, will also help to get rid of the dead skin cells that make skin dull and lifeless. Keeping your skin well moisturized and hydrated will avoid any dry, dull skin that appears a darker hue. Aloe gel is a recommended moisturizer due to its ability to repair skin damage and improve skin texture.
