My grandfather suffering from foot cramp at every night while sleeping, how can I help him?

Cause

Cramps in one’s foot or legs can be caused by various factors. Some cramps also occur for no particular reason. Cramps are often the result of a calcium deficiency or a magnesium deficiency. These deficiencies quite often cause cramping in the night. Cramps are also the result of lack of potassium which leads to an electrytic imbalance. When one does strenuous exercise, does not have a balanced diet or enough rest it can also lead to muscle cramping. A person who is suffering from severe diarrhea or vomiting may end up losing vital fluids and also the potassium quantum that the body needs. Hence for these it is vital to keep supplementing the lost fluids.

Treatment

There are those who suffer from leg cramps in the night for no apparent known reason. This has been medically termed as restless leg syndrome. In some people consumption of wine in large quantities can result in leg cramps. Hence to ease the cramping from occurring it is advisable to eliminate wine from the diet entirely. Else the other option is to first have some olive oil and then drink the wine. You can try putting the oil on a slice of bread and having it or add it to a salad. There are some dairy products and like milk that can also result in cramping. The option in these cases is to switch diets to foods such as tofu, broccoli, yogurt, lentils and the like. You can even add turnips, greens, almonds, rhubarb to the diet.

If cramping is occurring while a person is exercising then it is essential to keep one well hydrated. Do a warm up exercise before breaking into the main exercise. Avoid eating and then exercising or doing anything strenuous. It is essential to take daily supplements of potassium, magnesium and calcium. Two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar can be drunk on a daily basis to help relieve any cramping. Apple cider vinegar contains high quantities of potassium. For those who have a deficiency of calcium, they can try taking some calcium supplements on a regular basis. Chamomile tea is also beneficial in reducing cramps; hence try drinking about 2 cups a day for a few weeks. Mustard is also great in reducing leg cramping. Mustard has an acetic acid component which will help the body in making up more acetylcholine. Hence start taking a spoon or two of mustard on a daily basis. Pickle juice is also beneficial in dealing with this condition.
