Arachnoid Cysts: Can Brain Cyst Cause Sound In Ear

By Patricia | February 2, 2010

I have arachnoid cyst, I am experiencing buzzing sound in my ear, is it linked to cyst?

The buzzing sound in your ears is a condition known as tinnitus. This is a problem that is usually not associated with cysts but there are cases in which this can occur, especially when there is too much intracranial pressure on the centers of hearing. The problem that you are facing may or may not be eliminated with the surgery to remove the Arachnoid cyst, as tinnitus is quite a complicated phenomenon. There are some new treatments that are however available for this condition but these are experimental in nature and may not be readily available. These are not medication based but, curiously, music based and preliminary studies have shown effectiveness in nearly 80% of cases. Consult your doctor about these being available in his arsenal of treatments.

Treatment

An Arachnoid cyst is a cyst that is filled with cerebrospinal fluid, Arachnoid tissue, and collagen. These form in the Arachnoid tissue that covers the brain. The exact reason for this occurring is not fully understood. Some theories are very specific to the period of occurrence. For example, in children that are born with Arachnoid cysts, it is believed that a failure of the closure of tissue is responsible for the problem. Fetal development and growth is very different from post natal growth and a number of conditions or rather developmental problems can occur during the fetal or prenatal stages. In some cases the condition may in fact have its origins in the fetal development stage. Arachnoid cysts that occur in adults are more mysterious but a tear in the Arachnoid tissue is assumed to be the cause of this cyst turning up. Like all cysts, these have to be removed using surgery.

The ranges of symptoms that are associated with Arachnoid cysts include headaches and neurological disturbances. This is because of the pressure that is placed on the brain by the constantly expanding or already expanded cyst. The first course of treatment here is to reduce cranial pressure using methods like shunts, aspiration, and even excision. The surgery is quite simple, and depending on the exact location can be performed quite quickly. The only complications are when the Arachnoid cyst is growing inside the spinal column. This surgery to remove the cyst can leave some residual side effects. However, the overall prognosis after surgery is really quite good and you can return to a completely normal life after the surgery.
