Ear ringing remedies in Yoga

Ear ringing also knows as tinnitus is an illusion or sensation of a sound in brain or ears which is not existent in the external environment. The high pitched buzzing, hissing sounds are very irritating at times and for many people it can also interfere with their normal daily activities. The major cause for ringing ears is some problem with the inner ear, which connects wrong signals to the brain to produce a sound which does not exist. Exposure to loud noise can also be a cause for ringing ears; also tinnitus is linked with hearing loss and old age most of the times. Whatever the cause may be ringing ears gets worse with any kind of stress may it be physical or emotional.

Yoga plays an important role in the treatment of ringing ears along with the prescribed medications. Yoga when practiced on regular basis increases the levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is a neurotransmitter in the brain which inhibits the electrical activity and there by tinnitus. A recent study which was conducted at Howard Medical School and Boston University showed that the levels of GABA raised by 27% who practiced yoga for 60 minutes compared to the controlled group which spend 60 minutes in reading. Many studies prove that low levels of GABA tend to worsen the symptoms of tinnitus and other related situations like anxiety, depression, stress and fear. Yoga not only helps to increase this powerful neurotransmitter but also helps to deal with the mental being. It floods the body and mind with all the possible positive thoughts which are very important to avoid the ringing in the ears. This study also showed that after 5 months of constant yoga practice and breathing techniques the patients showed fewer tinnitus attacks and much less intense pain.
