Yoga For Piriformis

This is a very relevant question in today’s world. In this fast paced life of the microchip and microwave somewhere we have forgotten the basics to keep ourselves healthy. One of them is our posture. It’s so strange that even in our tight schedules and the late working hours, we somehow forget the importance of sitting straight or keeping a good posture while working. This affects your bodies in 2 ways. Firstly sitting in the wrong position can lead to a poor body structure. Secondly a wrong posture leads to deficient blood circulation creating further complications in the body.

Thankfully there is an ancient remedy for this ‘modern’ problem. It’s Yoga! Yoga combines working various muscle groups along with unique breathing patterns, massage therapy and meditation, which relieves stress. Following are a list of various exercises for the neck and the back. These Yoga poses will help you to improve your posture and get you in great shape.

Firstly I would like to guide you with simple tips for neck pain. Start by slowly bending your neck backward and looking towards the sky. Hold this position by counting 5 and bring the neck & head back to the starting position. Repeat this exercise 10 times. This exercise helps you to de-stress your mind. And at the same time helps in getting the right position of the neck and head. You can also try the half head rolls. It’s simple, all you have to do is inhale, and bend your head left and hold for 5 counts and exhale. Now take the head back to the normal starting position. Repeat the same exercise for the right side. Do it 5 times on both the sides keeping your breathing balanced. Another simple tip would be half backward rotation of head clockwise and anti-clockwise with eyes open. Do this 10 times.

Now lets shift our focus to back pain, which can be such a deterrent in your life. Everyone at some point in our lives must have started our day with a backache or pulled a back muscle while performing our daily chores. Don’t worry; Yoga is just what the doctor ordered for you. The beauty of Yoga is its amazing ability to gently increase building muscle strength and flexibility. It’s what you would call the perfect dose for prevention and treatment of back pain particularly for those who are prone to back illnesses.

There is a whole range of Yoga postures to cure back pain focusing on different back muscles groups. There is upper, middle and lower back pain and accordingly there are different yoga poses for each of these regions. Some of the poses include Pelvic Tilts, Shavasana (Corpse Pose), Cat Stretch, Locust Pose, Cobra pose-, Half Wind Releasing Pose, Wind Releasing Pose. Doing these exercises on a regular basis helps in improving your posture and flexibility.

Studies have shown regular Yoga has proved to be a boon for patients suffering chronic back pains, sciatica and piriformis. It’s highly recommended to do both neck and back exercises together as both body parts are connected directly and share the same muscle groups. So the next time if your back or neck is giving you a hard day, remember the healing touch of Yoga. It really works.
