Yoga for Back Pain

(August 8, 2008)

I've been suffering from back pain for a long time. Kindly advice how do I take care of my back through Yoga?

Various asanas of yoga can be used for providing relief from back pain and it has shown considerable results in providing instant relief. The asanas like uttasana (Standing Forward Bend) helps in pushing the trunk of the body either forward or backward as compared to other organs of the body. This aids in providing the desired stretch and strain to the body parts and balance to the body on the whole.

This asana provides the strength to the muscles in the body to keep the body stature upright and co ordinate with various other organs of the body to stabilize oneself in any posture for quite long. Tadasana (Mountain Pose) is another renowned position of yoga which helps to provide relief from the pain. It includes standing upright and holding the feet firmly to the ground. It supports the spine and the back and regulates the muscles by increasing the supply of oxygen to them.

Mountain pose helps to gain muscle strength and build stamina. Pain is caused in the back when the muscles become stiff and undergo fibrosis. These muscles should be massaged properly so that they can become flexible so as to relieve oneself from the acute pain. The muscles can be relieved by an increased supply of oxygen to them. Yoga involves breathing exercises which take more oxygen to various organs of the human body. This helps in providing comfort to the muscles of the body as well as back region and provides great ease to the mind and the body. Pranayam is an important yoga exercise which involves breathing exercises which rejuvenate various organs of the body. Other asanas like chakrasana (moon pose) and ardh chakrasana (Cresent Moon Pose) also help in providing the desired stretch to the body in order to relieve it from various painful experiences due to severe back pain.

The triangle position of yoga gives relief from muscular pain of the abdomen. These muscles help in toning of the body in the trunk region. Due to back pain the nerves of the body associated with the muscles also get affected and yoga helps in restoring the nerves by appropriate breathing exercises and proper pumping of blood to various organs of the body. The nerves once fixed to their positions help in providing comfort to the back and the muscles of the body and offers relief from pain.
