Yoga Asanas For Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which, the body has an impaired tolerance to glucose, and there is some problem in the insulin functioning. Some of the symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive hunger and too much of thirst. There are generally two types of diabetes: Type 1 or pancreatic diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes, which is gestational diabetes.

In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin, and yoga may not be able to cure this form of the disease. But Type 2 diabetes is generally caused by stress and life style problems. And this can be treated with yoga.

Yoga to cure diabetes: There are various techniques and asanas in yoga that can help cure diabetes.

Sun Salutation: Surya Namaskar increase and improve the blood circulation to the parts of the body. And this also tends to improve the insulin administration through the body.

Asanas or yoga postures: Yoga asanas are recommended for treating diabetes. Asanas are comfortable body positions and exercises that increase the oxygen in the blood, improve circulation, increase the efficiency of internal organs, and keep the body fit. The stretching poses make the endocrine glands more efficient.These asanas also have a good impact on the insulin functioning and on the pancreas.

Pranayama: Nadi Shodhana Pranayama, which is known as the alternate Nostril Breathing, is the basic form of pranayama, and is good for diabetics. It calms the nerves, brings down the stress levels, and helps in treating diabetes. Bhastrika and Bhramari Pranayama are good for diabetics. Bhastrika helps to bring in more oxygen into the body, while reducing the level of carbon dioxide. It is advisable to learn pranayama for an expert yoga teacher to do the exercises in an effective way.

Meditation: Meditation helps to cope with stress and is a stress management technique. It calms the mind, soothes the nervous system, and brings balance between the mind, body and soul. It is believed that focusing on the pancreas during meditation can have a positive effect on the insulin level in the body.

Yoga Nidra: This is a deep relaxation process that reduces stress and has a positive effect on the body and mind.

Yoga postures: some of the yoga postures that are beneficial for diabetics are as following -

  • Easy Pose (Sukhasana): This meditative posture brings inner peace.
  • Shoulder postures for warming up: These relieve the tension and stress in the shoulders.
  • Half Spinal Twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana): This posture is good for the adrenal glands, kidneys, liver as well as for the spine.
  • Stand Spread Leg Forward Fold: This asana is good for the legs and spine.

There are a lot of other yoga postures that you can do to help managing diabetes. We suggest you work with a yoga teacher for maximum benefits.
