Power Yoga vs Traditional Yoga

Power Yoga is a modern offshoot of traditional yoga that is now widely practiced. It’s a concept, which was introduced first in the late 90s in the west. Today it is one of the most popular exercises. Power Yoga is a perfect fusion of western exercises with various Yoga Asanas.

Power Yoga is highly derived and influenced from Ashtanga and Vinyasa. It’s a mix of these 2 branches of Yoga. Ashtanga are postures connected to Vinyasa (meaning back and forth movements), which are usually visible in the breathing patterns of Yoga. This synchronization of Asanas (postures), Pranayamas (breathing techniques) is what constitutes a complete Power Yoga workout.

It’s a challenging workout, which tests your physical, mental and emotional limits. The workout is fast paced, and aims to take you to a stage where the mind, body and soul are working in complete harmony. It’s a true test of physicality, mental strength and concentration. Another unique aspect of Power Yoga is that unlike traditional Yoga forms, there are no set poses or positions which have to be done in a particular sequence. Power Yoga is mainly focused on increasing the endurance and stamina levels of an individual. Traditional Yoga is more relaxed and time consuming. It also has a fixed set of poses and postures, which have to be done in a particular order for the best results.

The advantages of Power Yoga are aplenty. Since Power Yoga is fast-paced, you tend to sweat a lot more. This helps flush out toxins from the body in the form of sweat. Power Yoga also helps in reduce acidity and aids digestion. Power Yoga works on all parts of your body, thus helping cut the extra calories and also increasing your metabolism rate. It’s also a great stress-buster which helps treat problems such as hypertension and blood pressure. It also helps in shaping up the body by increasing flexibility and improving stamina and agility. Power Yoga is a great way to increase blood circulation and boost the immune system.

There are however some factors that you need to consider before you do decide to take up power yoga. Pregnant women are strongly advised not to get into Power Yoga as it can prove to be too stressful and tiring an experience. A qualified or certified Yoga instructor is a must for Power Yoga, as since there are no set poses, your instructor should have complete knowledge of Ashtanga Vinyasa pose. Also try to practice Power Yoga during the day as this would be the best time to practice this routine.
