Lemon Juice: Health Benefits of Vitamin C

By Patricia | June 17, 2009

There are not many down sides to drinking lemon juice and since you are making them organically, you are probably doing yourself a very healthy favor as well. Lemons are medicinally most famous in history for the prevention and treatment of scurvy. This is because of the Vitamin C content in lemons and also the fact that having copious quantities of lemonade is quite easy on the body compared to an alternative like onion juice.

Lemon Juice Benefits

Lemons are touted as a detoxifying agent for the body. This is probably because of its alkaline nature and also because of the presence of citric acid. It is said that lemon’s first action upon being ingested, is to stimulate the stomach to produce acids and therefore prevent the feeling of fullness that is associated with a bad appetite. Other fruits or herbs that have this very same effect are cloves and onions. Many of the alkaline elements that are part of the lemon are useful for the body, especially potassium, which is an essential element for the body’s nervous system. Our body uses sodium and potassium for the nerves to fire electrical signals to each other and the muscles. Sodium unfortunately cannot be taken in great quantities but potassium is a very “human-friendly” element and the body actually prefers this to sodium. The effects move further on as it is claimed that it stirs up the toxins in the body and allows them to be excreted. This is probably because of the stimulation of the liver by lemon juice. Detoxification cannot be done by any chemical substance and can only be done by the liver. Therefore, excessive heavy metals like chromium, mercury and selenium in the body are easily removed after the stimulation. Lemons also contain the vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and C, making this the best source of vitamin C.

The only downside to lemon consumption lies in a condition called acidemia. This is a condition where there is too much acid in the body that causes allergic reactions. This usually does not happen to people without liver or kidney problems. The other side effect of excessive consumption is because of the high sugar intake. If you are diabetic, this is a danger sign and you should switch to sugarless lemonade. Excessive sugar consumption also has an effect on the teeth as well, which can cause cavities and other dental decay as well.
