Shoe shopping may be high art for women, but most men would like to just buy a pair of any old sneakers and be done with it. Remember that buying just any shoes would not help, if you are going to use them for a specific purpose like walking.

  • Before you zero in on the brand or type of men's walking shoes you would like to get, spend some time getting to know your feet. Walk into your nearest sports or shoes store and have an expert fit you for walking shoes.
  • Check for size, grip, whether you prefer lacing, chunky or lightweight soles, and so on. Different brands of men's walking shoes would offer you a different comfort level. Pick what suits your lifestyle and fitness activity.
  • You may want to stick to a budget but do not compromise on comfort. Make sure your foot has enough room in the toe box; about half an inch distance between your toes and the end of the shoe or the size of a thumbnail is a good measurement to go with. Check for heel stability and ensure that the shoe does not pinch.
  • Men are fortunate to find larger sizes, so make sure you try shoes that fit like a glove and a size larger. Some men may have one foot larger than the other; it would be wise to pick up the larger size in such a case. Most salesmen might claim that the shoe will eventually fit you. Do not get taken in by sales pitches. Feet sizes remain pretty consistent throughout your adult life.
  • Ensure that your shoes are breathable. Feet sweat during walking, so try and look for men's walking shoes that have in-built sweat wicking material like a cloth mesh or sweat absorbing material.
  • Pay close attention to the heel, sole, and tread. The arch of the shoes should match your arch. Unlike running shoes, walking shoes do not require a high heel. Invest in a pair of men's walking shoes with good quality cushioning. Your feet will thank you for it. Think of shoes as tires for your feet and then think tread. Tread will vary on shoes meant for walking on gravel, smooth roads, or trails depending on the kind of traction you need.
  • You may also want to think about the weather conditions that you will use your walking shoes in. Breathability for hot humid conditions, water proof and multiple-grip for wet weather, and so on.
  • Finally, make sure you take a pair of your thickest socks or socks that you will regularly use when you shop for your walking shoes. They will help you determine the proper size.
