Remove Wax From Children’s Ear With Home Remedies

By Patricia | October 21, 2009

Ear wax is a substance that is created in the outer ear canal and has many important functions. The ear wax helps significantly in the protection of the ear canal as well as the eardrum by providing the ear canal with a waterproof lining. This helps keep it dry as well as prevents microbes from causing an infection within the ear. The ear wax, or cerumen - as it is medically known also helps trap dust and dirt particles – keeping them from either injuring or irritating the eardrum. After it is produced, the wax will flow from through the outer ear canal and on to the opening of the ear where it will either fall out or exit the ear during a bath. While it is normal for some individuals to have more ear wax than others, the ear will produce as much wax as it requires. A buildup of earwax can lead to many problems including a loss of hearing, significant amount of pain or even considerable discomfort. It is essential, however, that the condition be reviewed by a medical professional to make sure that these symptoms are not caused by any other underlying medical conditions. While most people try to use cotton swabs to help with the removal of earwax, this is one of the least productive options as the cotton swabs invariably push the wax further into the ear – something that may increase the chances of wax build up in the ears.

Some simple techniques in removing ear wax from our toddler’s ear include using a wash cloth to clean out his ears just after a bath. For better results, you could twist the tip of the cloth to form a point and clean out the ears. The bath helps make the wax wet and warm, allowing for much easier removal of the substance. Another option is to pour some olive oil, mineral oil or sesame oil into a metal spoon and warm the oil by moving the spoon back and forth over a lit match or flame from a lighter. Do not allow the oil to get hot as this may scald the insides of the ear canal. When the oil is a little warm, make your toddler lie on his or her side and pour the oil into the ear. Keep the oil in the ear for a few minutes before turning your child to the other side to let the wax flow out. You can then flush out any excessive ear wax with the help of a bulb syringe.
