Tooth Abscess Symptoms: Home Remedies for Jaw Swelling

Home Remedies

Home remedies are best suitable for mild to moderate conditions. Severe pain experienced due to jaw swelling may require medical attention. Some easy remedies that can help relieve pain are cold compresses or ice packs. Ice packs can help relieve pain and soothe the painful jaw. Ice packs also help reduce the swelling. Hot packs or hot compress is also an effective remedy to treat swelling and pain. Apply hot packs and cold packs alternatively to soothe the pain. A salt water gargle is the best way to restrict the spread of infections. Repeat salt water gargles at four to five hour intervals. Placing a slice of potato over the area is known to reduce jaw swelling caused due to tooth abscess. Repeating this procedure two to three times a day can prove to be an effective remedy. Vitamin C is known to reduce swelling and pain. Increase your intake of citrus juices to obtain the required amounts of Vitamin C.

Jaw Pain

Eating regular food could pose a problem with a painful jaw. Consider the intake of juices or semi solid foods such as oats, porridges and soups. It is advisable to make healthy food choices to avoid weakness caused by lack of eating. Avoid hard and difficult to chew foods that can further aggravate the pain. Include more liquids to keep yourself hydrated. Avoiding caffeine is recommended as caffeine increases sensitivity to pain. Take adequate rest until the condition improves.
