During sinus infections, colds and other respiratory disorders, the passages of the human respiratory system are obstructed by the quantity of mucus present in them. When there is a high amount of mucus blocking the passages, the chances of microbes developing in the passages are much higher. A particular quantity of mucus lining is required in the passages to protect the membranes of the respiratory system as well the digestive system of the body. The mucus lining works like a liquid moving mechanism and helps in carrying away the alien substances and microbes from the body. There are digestive juices in the digestive system of the body which are highly acidic and could corrode the inside walls of the digestive system, however, the ever mobile slim layer of mucous lining ensures that these juices along with other dangerous particles are ejected out of the body. Needless to say if there is a deficiency in the amount of mucus, it would lead to harmful ulcers.

However, many individuals who are afflicted with high amounts of mucus in their respiratory systems complain of breathing disorders. This excessive build up if mucus leads to conditions such as regular colds, sinus related ailments and most commonly, a state of low energy and malaise associated with excessive phlegm.

There are many remedies available to tackle excess mucus build up in the respiratory system. To begin with, a healthy diet plays an important role in controlling the mucus in the system. It is preferable to reduce or altogether avoid the intake of foodstuff such as dairy produce, products made from refined white flour and refined white sugar as these increase the quantity of mucus in the system. It is important to clean the nostrils regularly, ideally with warm water and a pinch of salt added to it. Ensure that your hands as well the glass being used is clean. The amount of the salt in the mixture is critical, as too much of it can irritate the sensitive inner walls of the nose. Gargling with warm salt water is also known to provide relief. Drinking hot fluids such as chicken or vegetable broths as well simple boiled water throughout the day are effective in building the immune system, hydrating the body as well as in reducing the excessive mucus. Drinking a cup of boiled milk with a bit of turmeric to it is known to be effective in fighting against infections, if any, in the respiratory system.
