But walking on a treadmill, like all other exercise form, have their advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages: Walking a treadmill is a very convenient form of exercising. While you burn the same number of calories as in walking, you can perform it indoors even when the weather outside is too cold, hot, windy or rainy. Walking indoors also does away with the need to face outdoor hazards and unfavorable conditions like traffic, climate, crowded streets and so on. Another advantage of treadmill walking is that of multi tasking. You could either listen to some music, or watch your favorite TV program. You can even read or monitor family activities (if you are doing it at home) while walking on the treadmill. This reduces the chances of boredom and monotony. You can also pick your own time at home and find a fitness regime within the privacy and comfort of your home. This is a great boon for lazy people who may otherwise opt out of any fitness program.

Walking on the treadmill allows you to calculate the speed and timing of your workouts and adjust them to your specific needs and capacity. It helps you to calculate heart rate, step count and the calories burnt.

Treadmills are a great and simple way of performing cardiovascular exercises. They increase your aerobic capacity and your endurance. Treadmills reduce your chances of injuries compared to other complex gym machines or walking on uneven road surfaces. This is especially beneficial for older people who may suffer broken bones in case of a fall.

Walking on the treadmill helps you burn calories effectively. Even a slow treadmill walk could burn 200 calories per hour, while you may burn much more (between 700 to 800) if you increase your pace. Lastly, treadmills also offer the benefit of reduced impact and greater shock absorption.

Disadvantages: One of the disadvantages of walking on a treadmill is that it helps exercise only certain groups of muscles, while the others are left out. Besides, there is a very different benefit from walking outdoors in the fresh air.
