Yoga For Cough

I know what Yoga has to offer people suffering from chronic coughs. Without going into the symptoms and causes, let me tell you that since time immemorial Yogis have been giving their inputs to the science of breathing. Just right breathing patterns, diaphragm breathing and a variety of stretches and spinal movements do help in developing the muscles and internal organs of the body as well as the breathing muscles by themselves.

A complete Yoga program and this I can tell from experience has a fantastic effect on one's general health and helps increase the practitioner's ability to carry one his / her daily activities. Yoga techniques are particularly suited to promote relaxation, psycho-emotional stability and exercise tolerance.

People suffering from chronic coughs should start a Yoga program with breathing exercises (Pranayama). These help make their respiratory muscles stronger and subsequently, helps them manage their breathing problems.

Here are some suggestions from my repertoire of working with myself and others:

Breathing

  • Abdominal breathing
  • Diaphragm breathing
  • Kapalabhatti
  • Alternate nostril breathing

Asanas

  • Mountain pose
  • Warrior I pose
  • Standing side bends such as Triangle Pose
  • Cat pose
  • Thunderbolt pose (Vajrasana
