Functions of the Chakras

In addition to their physical functions, chakras also serve as storehouses and distribution centers of both energy and information. They are also seats of our psychological and mental desires, habits, and tendencies. Each unsatisfied desire, like or dislike, attachment or aversion, our every karma fact, generates a subtle spate of energy. These energies are bound by afferent thoughts, such as: “I like this or dislike that; I’ve achieved this or that is what I’ve failed to do.” The ego embraces these thoughts and desires until they are released in outward action, or directed withinward in self-realization.

These desires are called vrittis in Sanskrit or Yogic parlance. They penetrate our subconscious minds and descend to their respective levels in the area of a specific chakra, depending upon the grossness or subtlety of the energy they exude. For example more spiritual energies rise and settle around higher centers. On the other hand, the more gross a vortex, the lower its center. As yet old, volatile vortexes are inundated by more recent ones with little or no effect on the conscious mind. However, then continue to blur the reflection of the Supreme Spirit.

When released, these energies merge and flow upwards. Before long, they create an enormous, uncontrollable flow that no barrier can withstand. And yet, just as a gush of water engulfs little ripples along its banks, so also does a powerful upward flow of pranic energy dissolve little vortexes of their own accord. A boost of upward energy through the astral spine is, therefore, the key to unlock and awaken the shut chakras.
