Famed actress Jennifer Anniston once said this about yoga: “Yoga calms me down. It’s a therapy session, a workout, and meditation all at the same time!” The person who ensures that Anniston gets her daily dose of calm is her longtime yoga teacher Mandy Ingber who maintains that Anniston has spent years not only keeping a consistent exercise regimen, but also eating moderately.

Ingber maintains that regular practitioners of yoga like Jennifer Anniston and her other celebrity clients make sure to set aside time everyday for self-care. “An hour each day dedicated to you: 30 minutes of yoga, a 20-minute walk, 10 minutes to set your head straight,” is what Ingber advises. The age-old practice of yoga has gained widespread popularity across the globe for its many benefits such as improved flexibility, weight loss, stress relief, mental alertness, better immunity and inner peace.

Today’s celebrities who undoubtedly live a fast-paced life under constant public glare are increasingly adopting yoga into their daily lives.

But beneficial as it may be, yoga like any other exercise regimen requires some motivation to get started. Ingber says that Anniston schedules her yoga sessions at her home to make sure she adheres to her schedule. “Don't wait to be motivated to start being healthy and moving your body,” says Ingber. However she does confess that she too has days when she doesn’t feel too motivated, but the idea is to show up anyway. Even if it seems like you are dragging yourself for a session, simply showing up does wonders in the long run.

Here’s a look at some of Mandy Ingber top poses, which she incorporates into Jennifer Anniston’s routine:

  • Temple pose: This is an excellent pose for toning the calves. To perform the pose, stand with your feet wide apart. Align your pelvis with your spine while engaging the abdominal muscles. Inhale, interlace your fingers and raise your arms above your head. On the exhale, bend your knees to 90 degrees and hold for five breaths.
  • Chair pose: Inhale and stretch your arms overheard. Exhale, bend your knees and lean your body forward to a 45-degree angle. For more intensive toning, you can also add squats.
  • Sun salute: This pose gives your entire body a good workout. Inhale, raise your arms overhead and as you exhale, lean forward and place your hands on the floor as you push your chest forward. Step back with your palms beneath your shoulders and keep the thighs firm, and hips and shoulders aligned. Lower your body to a low push-up. Scoop your upper body up and move into the upward facing dog pose. Then engaging the thighs and abs, move into downward facing dog.

Jennifer Anniston’s fit body is also on account of her healthy eating habits. Ingber suggests snacking on nuts during the day. This is a great way to pack in some nutrients and keep hunger pangs at bay. A healthy intake of water is also important. In addition, it’s always a good idea to stay hydrated with vegetable juices. Ingber maintains that each individual has a unique relationship with food and rather than going on fad diets, its best to focus on conscious eating. She also encourages small indulgences like chocolate or a glass of wine, every once in a while.

Yoga is not just exercise; it’s a lifestyle. An important tenet of that lifestyle is to flow with the currents of life. Anniston also famously said, “the greater your capacity to love, the greater your capacity to feel the pain.” This simple practice of being ever-willing to give life another chance is very much part of a yogic life.
