Aromatherapy is safe for your baby provided you take a few precautions. Essential oils are extremely powerful by virtue of their concentrated form and great care should be taken when using them for babies. Essential oils for a baby should be used in an extremely diluted form so as not to damage the baby’s delicate skin and body.

They should be even more diluted than the dose used in the case of adults.

As a way to introduce your baby to the odors of essential oils, try putting a couple of drops of lavender oil on a tissue and placing it near your baby during feeding time. This will make your baby associate the smell with warmth and comfort. Once your baby is used to the smell, you can leave him or her with a sitter, knowing that the smell will have a calming and soothing effect. It will even help your baby to sleep better at night.

Essential oils in their diluted form can also be used as massage oils for your baby. A gentle massage is a great way for you to bond with your baby. It will help to relax your baby and make falling asleep easier. It promotes circulation and can help to relieve colic. Massage with oils can help keep your baby’s skin soft, supple and well hydrated.

Here are some tips on using essential oils for your baby:

  • Do not use aromatherapy on babies less than 3 months old
  • Consult your doctor before trying any kind of aromatherapy on your baby.
  • Lavender and chamomile are the most suitable essential oils to use initially.
  • If you are using a diffuser, dilute 1 drop of essential oil in one tablespoon of water and mix it well. Do not keep the diffuser very close to the baby.
  • To help your baby fall asleep, mix 1 drop of lavender or chamomile oil in 20ml of full fat milk and add to the bath.
  • Add a drop of lavender, a drop of chamomile and a drop of geranium oil to 30 ml of sweet almond oil. This will make an excellent massage oil for your baby from the third month onwards.
