Yoga For Diabetes: Blood Sugar

I have been suffering from diabetes since I was 35 years old. Since then, I have had been on intensive insulin injection therapy and my blood sugar levels have always vacillated crazily. They’ve gone from highs of over 300 to less than 30 mg/dL. My hemoglobin results were over 7.5 and I even experienced insulin shock 3 times a month on average. Some of these were occasion for trips to the hospital as well. My weight had gone up to more than 210lbs and I had undergone a great deal of inflexibility in my upper torso and legs.

My doctor’s plan included rigorous insulin therapy. This was to be carried out through multiple daily injections of Lispro insulin, and an intensive and tough to maintain diet. This, besides other things, even involved carbohydrate counting. The chances of complications in the long run are including blindness, neuropathy, and amputation likely, if the disease is not managed through tight control of blood glucose ranges.

I started practicing Yoga in May 2004 and, ever since, my sugar levels have dropped to 6.8. I have shed 12 lbs and have had just one insulin shock incident. My muscle tone and flexibility have gone up considerably within just 6 months of practicing thrice a week. Now, my blood glucose fluctuates between 65 and 1800 mg/dL and my insulin dosage has dropped by 15%. I hope for continued improvement in my glucose levels.

I follow this basic Yoga program for Diabetes:

Yoga Asanas For Diabetes - Sun SalutationAnd Breathing Exercises

  • Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar)
  • Corpse Pose (Shavasana)
  • Double Leg Raises
  • Fish Pose (Matsyasana)

  • Tree Pose (Tadasana)

And all of this really works!
