I love running, but my head hurts?

(March 4, 2013)

Running is a healthy activity, but what do you do when you get a headache every time you run? Sometimes, headaches do arise while you are running or after a vigorous session; however, these headaches are usually nothing to worry about. Nevertheless, if the headache is recurring and if the pain is sudden and severe, consult your doctor immediately.

What are the kinds of headaches?

There are two kinds of headaches. Primary headaches, which are due to heavy running, usually mean that you do not suffer from any underlying medical problem and can get rid of it with medication. A primary headache could manifest as a migraine when you are running or after running. Secondary headaches could be a sign of a more serious problem like a brain bleed, brain tumor, or coronary artery disease that needs medical attention immediately.

What causes primary headaches?

The cause of your headaches is usually dehydration, bad breathing techniques, or overexertion. You can avoid this in future by taking deep breaths while running, consuming plenty of fluids, and avoiding foods that cause migraines. Also try to warm up before going for your run to avoid headaches.
