Some types of yoga can help you lose weight. The best way to lose weight (and often the fastest) is to do high intensity exercises, such as running or swimming. However, certain types of yoga can also help you lose weight by increasing your metabolic rate and thereby burning calories. If you are interested in burning calories and losing weight, you may want to try Power Yoga and Ashtanga yoga. Power yoga is an intensive, fast paced yoga that is often done in a warm room. It will make you sweat and it will increase your heart rate and have you breathing hard. Ashtanga yoga may also be done in a warm room, however is a little less intense and is great for those who want a mildly aerobic workout with traditional Sun Salutations and meditation. The traditional Sun Salutation done at a faster pace is an excellent way to add some spice to your regular yoga practice and increase your heart rate. Make sure you do each asana just as you would normally, but hold the poses for only a second or two. You will feel the benefits after one or two Salutations. You may also benefit from holding some of the more difficult asanas, such as plank, side plank or warrior for a little longer than usual – maybe up to 60 seconds. This will help you build muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat – helping you lose weight.
