The right amount of dilution depends upon the type of essential oil used and your skin type. Elderly people and children will require greater levels of dilution than other adults.

You can add essential oils directly to the bath.

If you have normal skin then about 7 drops added to your bath should suffice. However, if you have sensitive skin or the bath is for an elderly person or child over the age of 4 years, you should add only 4 drops of essential oil to the bath. If the bath is for a child between the age of 1 and 4 or for a pregnant woman, only 2 drop of essential oil should be added. For infants between 3 months and 1 year, only 1 drop should be added. Infants under 3 months old should not be given a bath with essential oils.

You can also dilute the essential oil in carrier oil before adding it to the bath. Add the oil to the bath after you have run the bath. If you add the oil while you are running the bath it is liable to evaporate and you will not enjoy the benefits of the essential oils.

If you have sensitive skin or if the bath is for a child or infant, it may be better to do a skin patch test to see if you are allergic to the oil or not. For children under the age of 4 years, it is best to use only lavender and chamomile at the beginning.

Here are some recipes for a bath with different kinds of essential oils.

- For a bath that will help calm and relax your mind after a hard day’s work, try adding 2 drops of bergamot, 2 drops of lavender and 2 drops of cedar wood to your bath.

- If you suffer from a nervous disposition, try adding 4 drops of geranium and 3 drops of basil to your bath. It will help soothe your frayed nerves and calm your nerves.

- If you suffer from insomnia add 3 drops of chamomile, 2 drops of lavender, 1 drop each of neroli and marjoram to your bath.
