What is sports massage? Sports massage provides an extra edge to players in high performance sports. Sportspersons stretch their physical limits while running, cycling, hiking, swimming, tennis and other sports. Regular exercise helps tone the muscles but the demands of the sport can cause muscle or tissue damage or lead to local muscle spasms that reduce blood flow or build waste products from energy production. Sports massage therapists are familiar with muscle and muscle groups and which movements cause stress for each sport. Some of the techniques incorporated are Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and compression massage. They help reduce injury, improve muscle flexibility, and maximize the supply of nutrients and oxygen through increased blood circulation.
What is Swedish massage? Swedish massage therapy uses firm but gentle pressure to advance circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation. It involves five different movements. Effleurage or long, gliding strokes is used by the therapist to acquaint with the subject’s body. Petrissage uses lifting of muscles and then kneading and compressing individual muscles. This clears toxins from muscle and nerve tissue. Friction consists of deep circular movements near joints and bony areas. This breaks down knots when muscle fibers bind together and relaxes the muscles and joints. Tapotement uses percussive movements, using hand strokes to strike the muscles. This relieves tension and muscle cramps. Deep tissue massage therapy. This is similar to Swedish massage but it is a more focused type of massage, which releases chronic muscle tension or knots. It involves more intense pressure and can be uncomfortable as compared to Swedish massage. It loosens muscle tissues, increase circulation of oxygen and removes toxins.
