Yoga Exercises for the Neck

Yoga exercises for the neck are an integral part of any yoga fitness routine.

Yoga takes note of the importance of the neck and gives special attention to the area because of its importance in the maintenance of your health and mobility. Most of us are afflicted with some sort of stress or tension in the neck and shoulder region, which contributes to and is worsened with stiffness and bad posture.

Neck problems can also contribute to tension headaches.

The neck is of particular importance for two reasons.

  1. The functioning of your brain, eyes and ears are connected to the neck because of nerves that connect these organs with the region. A misalignment of the   spine in this region can lead to problems with sight and hearing as well as headaches and problems with sleep.
  2. Blood supply and flow to the brain is also dependent on the neck as major blood vessels pass through it. A misalignment can create pressure on these blood   vessels, reducing the blood flow. Chronic fatigue is often caused due to this problem.

Yoga asanas or poses and neck exercises help improve and maintain the flexibility and mobility of your neck. Before starting with any exercise however determine the extent of exercise needed, depending on the flexibility of your neck. Here are some yoga exercises that can be practiced absolutely anywhere - whilst bathing, whilst working at your computer, while watching TV or even during your work breaks.

  1. Bend your head down, with your chin against the chest, and then return to the normal position.
  2. Bend your neck to the right, and then return to the normal position.
  3. Bend your neck backwards, and then return to the normal position.
  4. Bend your neck to the left, and then return to the normal position.
  5. Bend your neck down, with your chin against the chest, and then move from left to right and vice versa.

When doing these exercises however, make sure that your body is relaxed but your spine should be straight. Make sure that your neck is relaxed and shoulders facing forwards before you get started. Practicing these yoga neck exercises will help to relieve you of tension and stress, as well as improve flexibility and tone the muscles.

Caution

Many sites and books recommend the neck roll exercise, but this is best avoided. The rotational movement of the neck in this exercise can jam the side joints in your neck, causing inflammation.
