Health benefits of Bikram yoga


Bikram’s Yoga series consists of a carefully crafted 90-minute sequence of 26 yoga poses.



The program is designed to work into every part of the body and Bikram says that they work every single tendon, ligament and muscle, from bones to skin, inside out. He claims that each asana even has specific benefits that are summarized over 26 separate and extensive pages of benefits.

 

As far as benefits go, first of all, the practise of Bikram Yoga promises to warm up the muscles for greater flexibility, help achieve a deeper stretch, reshape the body and restore flexibility and expands one’s capacity to breathe deeply and fully.



Then, it tones, strengthens, and lengthens the muscles, while strengthening the spine. It also improves overall circulation in the body.



Bikram Yoga also promises to reduce the risk of sports injury, thereby achieving a relative relief from pain.

 

As far as weight loss or gain relying on one’s body's own needs goes, another remarkable benefit is that Bikram Yoga practices help flush out toxins from the body, burn calories and, thereby, reduce weight. This is achieved by balancing metabolism and, simultaneously raising energy levels and improving the efficiency of the immune system. Bikram Yoga promises healthy and balanced functioning of the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, nervous, digestive, elimination, respiratory, endocrine, and mental systems of the body.

 

On the mental level, people who have practised for some time claim that Bikram Yoga helps reduce levels of stress, increase balance, coordination, focus and discipline. The protracted practise also helps clear and calm down the mind.

While beginners learn more and more, daily, about how easy and accessible this series is and what to prepare for, advanced students always have somewhere extra to move towards. Fortunately, instructors allow for this, thereby providing both beginner and advanced alignment during class. Bikram Choudhury himself claims that the scientific nature of the sequence and the heated room, together with a regular practice, guarantees depth of overall development.
