Certification

To work as a professional shiatsu practitioner, a shiatsu certification program is necessary. The certification programs consist of different individual modules. The first module consists of basic fundamentals of shiatsu techniques such as how to use the thumb, fingers, palm, knees, and elbows to feel the imbalances in the body and to enhance deep relaxation. The second module comprises of meridian therapy, which teaches the students how to locate the meridians, points for diagnosis, and the sedation points. After that, they learn the exercises to reinforce the respective meridians. The third module provides the students with the hands-on experience. Students learn about the assessment points, body reading, assessment of body pulse, five element theory, record keeping, etc. The fourth module includes the various meridian exercises, which are practically implemented on the patients so as to relieve their specific pains and to promote the general health. The fifth and final module provides the students with the opportunity to work in public settings, under the supervision of senior and experienced shiatsu practitioners.

Salary

According to a salary survey report by Salary.com, the average salary of a shiatsu therapist ranges between $28,352 and $61, 382, annually.

Career Opportunities

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the massage therapy and related careers like shiatsu massage will show an overall nineteen percent of career growth through the year 2018.
