Yoga for Voice improvement

Although voice is a gift of God, you can train it to improve and make it sound beautiful. Try the following asana for improving your voice –

  • Simhagarjan asana - Sit on a yoga mat in vajrasana but with your knees apart in such a way that they are parallel to your shoulders. Place palms on the floor in the space between two knees, fingers pointing towards the body and the base of the palm in the opposite direction. Now lean a little forward and gently tilt the head backwards. Inhale slowly gazing at the center of your eyebrow. Open your mouth and extend the tongue out lie a dog. While exhaling produce a sound similar to a roar of a lion like “aach” with mouth wide open. Relax, breathe in and close the mouth. Repeat this 10-12 times, this asana will help to improve your voice. A little modification in the sitting position can also be done while performing this asana. Bend your legs at the knees and place your feet between the crotch areas, instead of sitting in vajrasana. Sit in such a way that your body weight is mainly on your toes and at the same time you can take support of your heels. Then in similar manner make a roaring sound of that if a lion.
  • Chanting OM - daily reciting the mantra OM for at least 10 minutes without any breaks will help. Do with little variations and modulation in the voice, this will not only help to improve the base of your voice but will also help increasing your voicing stamina.
  • Ujjhayani pranayama – this is the most effective asana for voice improvement, in this full throat is contracted inside and a reverse sound is produced (a sound produced when you are inhaling in through nose with closed lips and contracted throat). After you breathe in completely, relax your throat muscles and exhale through left nostril by holding the right one with thumb.
