Scoliosis is a back condition that curves the spine. It can be very painful and may benefit from yoga that focuses on the spine and back. Before starting any yoga routine, remember to consult your doctor to make sure your body can handle the workout. Always be aware of your body’s limits when doing yoga and this is especially important when you are also dealing with Scoliosis.

Asanas that may be especially beneficial for those with Scoliosis are those that focus on the back and spine. Try asanas such as half spinal twists, remembering to keep your neck and back in alignment. Also, you may benefit from downward facing dog – relaxing your head between your arms and breathing deeply while flattening your back as much as possible. After downward facing dog, drop to your knees and relax in Child’s pose, focusing your energy on your third eye. After relaxing in Child’s pose for 30 seconds, push back into downward facing dog and do dog at a fire hydrant (lifting your right leg into the air and letting it hang behind you). Remember not to push yourself too much. Then switch legs.  Finally, if your back allows it, you may also wish to do threading the needle pose. Do not put too much stress on your neck in this pose and concentrate on twisting the spine as much as is comfortable for you.
