Kundalini yoga, often referred to as tantric yoga, is an ancient form of yoga, which is an attempt to create flawless communication flow between the mind and body. It uses a set of techniques that involves the use of the mind, the body, and the senses. Kundalini is a Sanskrit word which literally means ‘coiled’. It is believed that there are a total of seven chakras in the body through which our life force runs. Until we consciously stimulate these chakras, this healing life energy lies dormant and coiled up at the base of our spines. This dormant life force is often compared to a coiled serpent, the power of which can be drawn through several kundalini yoga poses. These kundalini or tantric yoga poses are designed to awaken these seven chakras so that the body becomes alive and is awakened.
There are several factors that kundalini yoga focuses on. The main two factors are the body’s maturity potential and the psycho spiritual growth that the practitioner has already achieved. Since the kundalini energy is believed to be at the base of the spine, the spine and the endocrine glands play an essential role in this yoga practice. While performing kundalini yoga, it is also important to focus on the breathing and the rhythm of movement of the body.
Kundalini yoga poses are performed in conjunction with a specific rhythm of breathing. It is believed that when breath control is practiced, it helps to free the energy lying dormant in the lower reaches of the body. The control of breath frees this energy and allows it to move freely in the lower parts of the body. The energy then moves in an upward direction. To enable this upward movement, the series of poses in kundalini yoga are made up of repetitive movements. Each of the movements ends up in a pose that is held for several minutes during which the practitioner also follows a specific breathing rhythm.
Kundalini sequences are also known as kriyas and all the kriyas are performed at a rapid pace so that full benefits of awakening the kundalini are achieved. Though kundalini is a highly favored form of yoga, it is also the most controversial one because of the dangers involved. Kundalini yoga dangers become apparent if the pure kundalini energy is awakened before the body is prepared to handle it. It is, therefore, recommended that those who want to try kundalini yoga should approach it safely and intelligently.
