What Is Kundalini Yoga Or Kundalini Meditation
Yoga is not just a physical discipline but is also spiritual. Kundalini yoga is also referred to by some as Kundalini meditation. It is a physical and meditative regimen that lays great stress on meditation. It comprises of techniques that employs, mental, sensory and physical exercises to create harmonious communication and understanding between the mind and the body. Its focus is on psycho-spiritual growth and awakening and the body’s ability or potential for maturation. It recognizes and takes into account the importance of the spine and the functioning of the endocrine system for a sound perception of yogic awakening.
From sources of classical literature, descriptions of Kundalini ascribe it three distinct manifestations.
They are:
1. Para - Kundalini which is a reference to the universal energy.
2. Prana – Kundalini is the second manifestation and refers to the energizing function possessed by the body-mind complex.
3. Shakti- Kundalini is the third manifestation and refers to a consciousness that exists and both assimilate or absorb and intermediate between the two.
It also adds that the three forms are one and the same, but it is important to understand them individually so as to understand the kundalini’s distinctly different manifestations.
In practice Kundalini yoga comprises of a variety of bodily postures and expressive movements, breathing techniques, utterances and degrees of concentration. None of these movements and postures that constitute the sequence can be regarded merely as gymnastic or stretching exercises. Most of the techniques that are followed in Kundalini yoga follow a distinct pattern and have certain key features like a number of breath control methods, a generally erect or straight positioning of the spine, cross legged positions, using mantras, focusing you mind most often on your breathing, and closed eyes. As with some other forms of yoga, in Kundalini yoga too the flow of movements is coordinated closely with breath.
Kundalini yoga has a strong founding in Kriyas, which are specially devised sets of exercises. These Kriyas or routines enable the practitioner to focus on specific aspects of herself or himself if felt that they need work at the time. No matter how much time you dedicate to practice, whether three minutes or three hours, the benefits are significant and motivational in themselves. Practicing this discipline of yoga will keep your body in shape and strengthen your mind. It will improve your levels of self awareness, self control, concentration, peace and serenity, and self confidence.
