Choosing a Portable Massage Table

One of the good things about being a massage therapist is that you can choose to provide your services at the end location (where the client is) or at your office or center. Thus, having a portable table ensures that you take your office with you, wherever the table goes.

This gives you more mobility than if you were tied down to one location.

Of course, you need to get a good portable massage table for this, and in this article, we talk about how you go about choosing a good one.

There are a few basic questions that you need to answer before you can find one to suit your needs, and below we detail what you need to decide on before you go out and put your money on a table.

What Type of Massage do you do?

This is the first question that you need to answer. Hot stone massage, for example, is not as vigorous as Thai massage, and you need different kinds of tables depending on the kind of massage you do. Getting a lighter table than what is needed means that the table will rock too much, making everyone uncomfortable, and getting a really sturdy and heavy one means that it's that much extra weight for you to carry around with you.

Also, you need to decide on the kind of extras you need. Some kinds of massage do not require the side fittings for the arms, while reiki massage needs this. Keep in mind that not all makes of massage tables will offer you the kind of fittings that you need, so you need to check that out as well.

How big a Table do you need?

Most massage tables are between 25 and 30 inches broad. Five inches may not seem like much when you look at it in a scale, but in a table, that’s a big difference.

For example, if you're going to be massaging men, going with a bigger table is better. A small table will make them feel uncomfortable, apart from stability concerns, if they lie too close to the edge of the table. They will not be able to relax if they’ve got to keep worrying about falling off all the time. On the other hand, if you get a big table, it not only means extra weight for you to carry around but also extra strain for you. When the person is lying too far inside, it means that you may not be able to put your body weight into the massage, and will have to rely on pure muscular power. This will not only tire you out quickly, it will also result in a less than satisfactory massage.

It is also important to get one with height adjustability, not only to help people get on and off but because the table has to be at the right height for you. So when you have to lean inwards, having the table a few notches lower will help you get more of your shoulders and back into the massage than you would with it at your usual height.

Your budget

This comes last in our list because there’s no point in choosing an expensive table when it will not suit your budget. What you need to do is find one that you like and then check a few different places to find where you get the best deals. Some manufacturers even sell online, and you may be able to get a better deal there than anywhere else.
