The Mirena coil is an intra-uterine system that is inserted into the womb as a contraceptive device. It contains levonorgestrel, an active synthetic ingredient, which mimics progesterone, the female sex hormone.

Levonorgestrel, which is present in the coil, is gradually released into the womb to prevent pregnancy. Levonorgestrel changes the chemical reaction of the mucus which forms at the mouth of the womb. This mucus becomes thicker and stickier, and sperms in the vagina find it impossible to enter the womb. This prevents the successful fertilization of the egg.

Many women who suffer from long, heavy and painful menstruation are also benefited by levonorgestrel, since it prevents the endometrium (womb lining) from thickening, and thereby there is less tissue shed during menstruation. Thus bleeding is lighter.

The Mirena coil has also been successfully used in menopausal women as a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

While there have been suggestions that certain poses in Yoga and Pilates can affect the position of the Mirena coil, there is no clear evidence to authenticate it. It is important to perform both yoga and pilates exercises in fluid movements that are devoid of all jerks. It is also equally important to ensure that the Mirena coil, is properly inserted, and is correctly positioned. The Mirena coil is very flexible, and it can turn and bend with the contortions of the body. It cannot easily perforate or slip out and if you are unsure, you can always check, by using your fingers to feel the strings.

However before you start strenuous poses, or if you do experience any bleeding or discomfort, it would be better to consult your doctor.

In fact, many experts feel that yoga can help counteract the effects of the Mirena. Like most contraceptive devices, for many, the Mirena too, comes with certain side effects like irregular periods, loss of libido, mood swings and weight gain. Yoga is beneficial in reducing these side effects.

Mood swings caused by Mirena can be combated by most yoga poses, which include meditation, breathing exercises and relaxation. Irregular periods, hormonal mood swings and symptoms of PMS, caused by Mirena can be counteracted by yoga poses like Cobra (Bhujanga Asana), Half Wheel (Ardh Chakrasana) and Shoulder Stand (Sarvang Asana).

Weight gain caused by Mirena can be counteracted by yoga poses. Hatha Yoga has been found to be particularly beneficial, as also power yoga, hot yoga (Bikram yoga) and Ashtanga. Their vigorous poses help in toning and strengthening muscles and reducing weight gain.

For loss of libido caused by Mirena or any other intra-uterine device, various poses of Kriya yoga can improve sex life, by improving mental and physical fitness.
