Will there be any ill-effects if I suddenly stop doing yoga?

(May 20, 2013)

There are numerous health benefits that have been associated with the ancient practice of yoga. People all over the world can enjoy these benefits, regardless of their age and gender. Yet, there are many people who avoid taking up this practice, mainly because they know that they cannot continue it for a long period of time.

Will there be any ill-effects if I suddenly stop doing Yoga?

No, you should not suffer from any ill effects if you stop yoga all of a sudden.

However, once you stop yoga, your body will just go back to being what it was - before you took up the practice. This means that any improvements you noticed in your body will stop or even reverse gradually. The practice of yoga generally brings about several positive changes in your body, such as -

  • Better muscle and skin tone
  • Boost in immunity
  • Improved sleep patterns
  • Increased flexibility, strength and stamina
  • Lower stress levels
  • Slower resting heart rate
  • Weight loss

Once you stop yoga, these positive changes will no longer be evident.

This is probably why many people believe that they are suffering from adverse side effects after they have stopped yoga.

The good news is that you get back the healthy habits which yoga brings about just by starting the practice all over again.
