Dermatologists refer to this condition as the "itch-scratch syndrome," even though it may sound as trivial, the more one scratches, the more it tends to itch.

There is a simple yet direct explanation to this condition. Certain kinds of cells known as "mast cells" are distributed throughout a number of tissues in the body. When these cells get aggravated, they excrete a range of chemicals into the surrounding tissue. These chemicals cause swelling or intense itching. . Histamine is one of the utmost chemical triggered by the mast cells. Antigens are usually responsible for aggravating the mast cells. Mast cells are usually triggered by a particular antigen for example, pollen. The mast cells can also be triggered by external factors, for example, by an ear bud you were squeezing down your ear canal. Hence the more the mast cells are aggravated the more irritated they get, thus leading to the itch-scratch cycle. Some dermatologists recommend the use of a small amount of a steroidal emollient or salve to the outer part of the ear canal, to prevent further itching.

In most other cases, excessive ear wax contributes to the itchy feeling of the ear. Individuals who complain of itchy, flaky ears or ears that gather excessive wax are likely to develop swimmer's ear.

Swimmer's ear begins as an itchy ear. If the itchy feeling is not given medical care or treatment, it can grow into a difficult infection. The pain that can develop due to the itchy ear can be agonizing. Once infection kicks in, you will require a doctor's assistance and a course of antibiotics to stop the infection from growing further.

To prevent the ears form developing into an infection firstly, blow-dry the ears. Get rid of the moisture formed in the ears, due to a recent shower or a swim. Eliminating the moist conditions in the ear gets rid of the harmful bacteria and fungi that find damp places suitable for growth.

Consult with an ear specialist to correctly diagnose whether there is a degree of infection caused due to the itch and flakiness. If there is pain associated with the itch and flaking, it can be controlled with the help of non steroidal inflammatory medication prescribed by the health specialist. Regular cleansing of the external ear is also helpful in maximizing the efficacy of the ear drops or ointment and the medications used. Take utmost care when bathing or swimming, not to allow water inside the ear canal.
