(November 10, 2010)

I am a 21 year old male. I stand 5'8''. My father is 5'11'. Please suggest yogic exercises to increase height? by what margin does height increase in a year?

Yoga has been used by people for a long time to improve their physical and mental health. Yoga for height gain can be effective even when the height issue is due to heredity. People may desire to grow taller due to aesthetic reasons or to pursue a career that has certain requirements regarding height. In performing the yoga asanas for height increase, the whole body will get stretched especially the spine, which will provide the body with strength and balance needed for growth.
Practicing yoga for height growth helps in increasing the metabolic rate of the body and enables higher production of the hormone from the pituitary gland, which helps in growth. Chakrasana (Wheel Pose) helps in stretching the midsection of the body and elongates the body from the region of the stomach. It also helps in relaxing the muscles of the side and back. This tension becomes a hindrance to growth, but with regular practice of the yoga for height increase you can relieve the tension.
Another very effective yoga asana for height increase is the Tadasana (Mountain Pose). The posture helps strengthen the vertebral column and improves the posture of the body. To perform this posture, you should stand straight keeping your neck, waist and legs in a straight line. Make sure that the weight of your body is spread evenly on your feet. With your hands clasped together, breathe in and slowly raise them above your head. Both your palms should be facing up. Hold your breath and let your heels slowly come up so that you are standing on your toes. Then let your body stretch up as much as you can while keeping your arms and legs straight. While breathing out let your arms come down slowly. Let your heels also come back down to the position you started with. You should repeat this posture around 2 to 3 times.
You could also try other exercises like swimming, pelvis shift, and dry land swim. Hanging from a rod is also considered very effective to increase height. To perform this exercise find a place you can hang from so that your legs do not touch the ground. Keep your hips, shoulders and arms relaxed. Gravity will help stretch your body. To increase your height through yoga and other exercises, it is essential that you practice them regularly. You should also combine it with a diet rich in minerals, vitamins and proteins that will help increase production of the growth hormone, thereby increasing height.

Height, for the most part, is hereditary and depends on genetic conditions. Yoga can certainly help. For more details on this specific issue, I suggest you visit this link: http://www.yogawiz.com/askquestion/7/question-on-yoga-for-height-and-stamina-hello-sir-.html As regards the second part of your query, I’m afraid there is no definite margin for annual height increase. But if you’ve started practising Yoga or swimming and cycling or aerobics or gymnastics before the age of 14, they normally help add an inch or two over and above your normal growth.
