Tips & Home Remedies To Whiten Groin Area

By Patricia | May 7, 2010

Dark patches on the skin in the crotch area can be quite unsettling, preventing you from indulging in activities such as swimming and sunbathing. These dark patches are usually not indicative of any underlying disorder and in fact are quite a common phenomenon. They usually occur naturally, often as a result of excessive pigmentation or may develop over time due to skin friction that occurs when the thighs rub against each other. These areas of pigmentation in the pubic area also tend to develop with age. Many of those who develop these patches are often at a loss in trying to figure out how to whiten these dark groin areas.

Such conditions are also common in areas such as folds of the neck, elbows and armpits and are usually caused in a similar manner. People often observe a thickening around the darkened areas, a sign that the skin is trying to protect itself from injury caused by the constant friction.

On rare occasions, fungal infections such as ringworm may also cause reddish or darkened patches to appear around the groin area, which is why you should first consult your doctor to ascertain the cause of the patches. Only if your doctor rules out medical conditions you may try some home remedies to clear up those offensive patches.

Home Remedies

  • A few simple home remedies may help in the treatment of dark patches around the groin area. One of the first things you need to do when you notice these dark patches is to stop wearing tight clothes and those made from artificial fibers such as nylon or spandex. Wear lose fitting clothes made from natural fibers such as cotton and linen. This is not necessarily a bad thing and you can still dress fashionably in well-styled garments that allow the skin to breathe. Absorbent cotton underwear will help keep the groin area free of dampness.
  • If you are fond of exercising, ensure that you shower immediately afterwards and dry your groin area carefully. If you suffer from excessive perspiration, use deodorizing talcum powder to keep the groin area free of dampness. Shower and change your clothes as often as required.
  • You can try using a skin whitening cream on the groin area. Those that contain salicylic acid, hydraquinone or alpha-hydroxyl acid are usually effective when it comes to improving skin texture and lightening the skin. There is a profusion of these skin whitening agents that are available and the claims and counter claims can be quite confusing at first. Always choose a cream made by a reputed manufacturer whose products you have tried in the past with satisfactory results.
  • You could also use a homemade whitening cream using turmeric powder, yogurt and lime juice. Applying this paste which has natural antiseptic and whitening properties is reputed to be very effective in lightening dark skin patches in the groin region.
  • Soaps made using natural ingredients such a black licorice may also help to whiten skin around the groin area. Use these soaps along with natural exfoliating agents such as oats to scrub the groin area. Be gentle and take care while exfoliating. Injuring the skin will only compound the problem. Regular exfoliating can help improve the texture of skin as well as lighten it.
  • Drink a glass of warm milk with a pinch of turmeric in it everyday. This helps boost your immunity so that your body is stronger from the inside and so that infection cannot cause damage to your body.
  • Losing weight is one of the best remedies for a black groin. However, if you have a brown or red groin, there may be an infection brewing. Be sure to consult a doctor and get your skin tested for skin infections. Drink lots of fluids so that you can get rid of any toxins that may be causing the buildup of dead skin.
  • At times, when those dark patches prove too stubborn for any of these remedies, you can try bleaching the area using a topical bleaching agent. Remember to test for allergies before attempting to bleach your groin area lest you end up with severe inflamed and even more discolored skin. These topical bleaching agents while a temporary cure at best, are often the last resort in cases of stubborn patches.

If none of these remedies work then you should consider consulting a dermatologist.
