Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for improving the physical, emotional and spiritual health of a person. Although the term aromatherapy itself seems to imply that it is the inhalation of essential oils that it deals with, in actual, aromatherapy also deals with massages, and rarely, the ingestion of essential oils.

Aromatherapy is not something that you can do yourself. You need to have knowledge of the different essential oils and what they can do for the body. You also need to understand the interaction that different oils have with each other.

This is important because there are a number of essential oils that are beneficial when taken in small amounts, but can be toxic when used in larger quantities. Moreover, this is true even when inhaled or massaged, not only when ingested.

There are a number of educational institutions that give degrees in aromatherapy, and some of them have online courses too.

What are the different institutions that provide aromatherapy training online?

The list of organizations that provide degree courses is too long to be included in this article. Suffice to say that there are plenty of them. You, however, need to be careful because a number of these institutions are accredited by the government. This means that any degree that is given may not be useful to you in your future as an aroma therapist.

Also, make sure that you do your homework properly before you join. There are many government websites that give you the names of institutions that are government accredited and going with one of them is a good idea.

What are the different aromatherapy training courses?

Each institution has different coursework, and not all institutions follow the same pattern. Most institutions however teach the following basics:

  • Introduction to aromatherapy – covers the history of aromatherapy
  • Essential oils – all the essential oils that are used in aromatherapy
  • Chemical composition – the chemical composition of each of the oils and how they interact with the human body and each other
  • Methods of administration – inhalation, massage, and ingestion
  • Demonstrate use – demonstrate the safe use of different essential oils
  • Create plans – be able to create plans for optimal health based on diagnosis

The actual coursework is much more extensive and covers a lot of other subsidiary details too. The above is just the basic that all coursework will have.

Choosing a state licensed institution is a good idea because it means that the institution has met the requisite criteria to be licensed. This does not mean that non-licensed institutions are bad and cannot be trusted, and in many cases, a private individual can give you more knowledge than an institution can.
