Asanas For Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative disease that affects different parts of the nervous system and has flare-ups where the person alternates between periods of good health and bad where the condition seems to aggravate. The general symptoms include poor digestive function, anxiety, stress, fear, worry, constipation, fatigue, extra sensitivity, rough or dry skin, insomnia, weight loss or being underweight, pain, headaches, erectile dysfunction, memory problems, poor focus, intolerance to heat, etc. It is not easy to diagnose multiple sclerosis, as there are no fixed symptoms or blood tests to detect it.

Yoga is beneficial for people suffering from multiple sclerosis as it really helps to make the person feel better both inside and out. Dhyana or meditation, pranayama or breathing techniques and asanas are extremely beneficial for multiple sclerosis. Yoga asanas or poses help to harmonize the breathing and stretch the body that makes you aware of every limb in your body and how it functions, relieves tension, boosts and improves blood circulation to every part of your body, helps to maintain balance and co ordination. Yoga asanas or poses teach how to breathe in the right way and when this is combined with the asanas or poses it acts on the body like a powerful rejuvenator. Poses like the Tadasana or the Mountain Pose, Trikonasana or the Triangle Pose, Virabhadrasana I or the Warrior Pose I and Virabhadrasana II or the Warrior Pose II are the ones that help in relieving the symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis.

However, there is one important thing to note here; people suffering from multiple sclerosis cannot bear excess heat, their bodies are heat intolerant so the asanas or poses should be practiced in a slow and relaxed manner. This will prevent the body from heating up and will keep it cool. It will also help to improve the balance and boost focus and concentration. Since yoga asanas or poses work from deep within they help to deeply cleanse and eliminate the toxins and that treats and prevents the digestive tract disorders. This also strengthens the body’s immune system naturally so the patient would not need to depend entirely on medicines to fight off infections. Since the people suffering from multiple sclerosis go through periodic flare-ups of symptoms it causes a severe emotional strain and stress to them. Yoga asanas or poses, Dhyana or meditation and pranayama or breathing exercises help to alleviate the stress and keep them in a calm and peaceful state.
