Vaginal Infections: Symptoms, Treatment & Herbal Remedies

By Patricia | July 10, 2009

There are two things to consider here. The first is whether the discharge is just an overflow of normal vaginal lubricant. The second is whether the vaginal discharge is related to some kind of infection like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or PID. If your vaginal fluid is clear and does not contain any pus then you are probably experiencing a normal lubricant discharge and you might only be ovulating. If on the other hand, you have a completely milk-like or yellow vaginal discharge then you have an infection. Vaginal infections can be numerous and the exact type of the infection can range from bacterial vaginosis, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas vaginalis, or other infections of the vagina. You should consult a doctor for this condition as many vaginal infections have started to become resistant to common antibiotics.

Symptoms

Vaginal infections are usually caused by sexual activity – mostly because of having multiple partners and not practicing safe sex. Women are especially at risk of contracting infections from male partners than men. Though men can be infected, they sometimes tend to be asymptomatic because of the high presence of zinc in the male reproductive system quelling the growth of some bacteria. This is what makes venereal diseases especially tricky, since the male partner may display no noticeable symptoms. Always wearing a condom is the best way to protect you. Males however cannot escape diseases like gonorrhea and Chlamydia as these cause symptoms in men and women. If either of these two diseases is not treated, they will go on to cause infertility and also affect the eyes and the heart valves. Typically, these diseases manifest in the existence of pus in vaginal discharge as well as painful urination, tenderness of the pelvic region, irregular menstruation, painful menstruation, painful intercourse, and also bleeding during intercourse.

Treatment

If you feel that you suffer from any of the above symptoms then you should see a doctor who will prescribe you the required antibiotics. Remember that safe sex is not related to just vaginal sex but also oral and anal sex – always use a condom. After getting the prescription drugs for the condition, you should use the following herbal remedies as well, which include the topical use of diluted tea tree oil on the vagina, garlic taken in the diet for its antibiotic effect, and using tampons soaked in milk to increase the population of good bacteria in the vagina. A high dosage of ginger in the diet will reduce pain and inflammation.
