Itchy and swollen eyes can be treated with effective home remedies. Mild allergic reactions can be best treated with cool eye pads made of cucumber slices. Cucumber slices reduce swelling and soothe the itchy sensation. Eye pads made of raw grated potato placed in a soft cloth can be placed over the eyes to reduce puffiness. Remove the eye pads after a short while and rinse your eyes with cool water. Warm compresses are also an effective remedy to treat eye conditions and relieve pain. Tea bags eye treatments include alternate hot and cold methods for swelling. This helps to increase circulation and promotes the drainage of excess fluids. Chamomile tea bags can prove to be more effective in soothing the eyes as compared to regular tea bags. Placing a fresh fig cut into two halves is also an effective remedy to treat swollen and itchy eyes. Keep your head in an elevated position to avoid swelling due to fluid retention. Avoid rubbing your eyes; this may further aggravate the swelling.

Exercising dietary controls can also reduce swelling around the eyes. Allergic reactions are most likely to subside in a short span of time. Eat a well balanced meal but ensure a moderate or low salt intake diet to avoid fluid retention due to high salt intake. Certain foods that reduce swelling around the eyes are cabbage, raisins, bananas and cranberry juice. Intake of stimulants such as tea, coffee and alcohol must be avoided until your condition improves. Intake of such stimulants can restrict deep sleep. Sleeping for at least seven to eight hours can reduce the chances of swelling due to lack of sleep. Take adequate rest and de-stress yourself until the swelling reduces. It is also important to protect the eyes from harsh sunlight and cosmetics until these conditions improve.
