One of my cheek is swollen due to a minor accident, can I use hot compress with salt ?

The swelling that is brought about due to an injury is a part of our body’s natural healing process. Very simply put, swelling can be described as a natural inflammatory response of our body, to an injury. It is characterized by either a change in shape of the injured area or an increase in size of the bruised or injured area. When we suffer from an injury, certain chemicals are released by our body, which act on the capillaries; the very tiny blood vessels that leak fluid into surrounding tissues. The chemicals then cause these tiny blood vessels to widen or vasodilate. The widening of the capillaries brings about an increase in blood flow as well as an increase in the amount of fluid that is being leaked into the tissues present in the injured area. The excess leakage of fluid by the damaged capillaries, into the injured site, is what causes a swelling.

How To Reduce Swollen Cheek

Swelling may not be induced by an injury alone, but could be caused by several other factors, such as; cysts, contusions, swollen organs, blood clots, fluid collection, inflammations, as a side effect of medications, allergic reactions, circulatory problems and so on. Here are a few home remedies that can help in treating this condition. You could use a hot compress to reduce swelling. This will also enhance blood circulation in the affected area. Dip a towel in a bowl of hot water, squeeze out the excess water and then press the towel gently against the swelling. This procedure can be performed 2-3 times a day to reduce swelling. You could also use a cold compress in a similar manner. Mix together a teaspoon of freshly squeezed lime juice, 2 teaspoons of honey and one cup of lukewarm water. This concoction should be consumed every morning till the swelling subsides.

Potatoes have been found to be highly beneficial in reducing swelling. Chop a medium sized potato into thin slices. Place these slices gently on the affected area for 10-15 minutes. This should be done 2-3 times a day to yield positive results. Reduce the intake of salt as this will delay the healing process. Fast foods, french-fries and potato chips, are all known to have a high salt content and hence should be avoided altogether. Drink plenty of water; this will keep your body well hydrated while also enhancing blood supply. If none of these remedies work and the swelling shows no sign of subsiding, consult a physician immediately.
