What I need to do before and after ear piercing to escape ear swelling and infections

A new piercing can be very tricky if you do not know the right precautions that should be taken. Even if you care very diligently for your new piercing, they take their own time to heal. However, a piercing seldom becomes complicated enough to warrant medical attention. The best way to care for your new piercing is to know the right after care.

What You Need To Care About?

If you have got your ear pierced from a salon, ask them if they have a special medicated cleansing solution. Most salons keep this solution which is antiseptic and very important in the care for new piercing. The cleansing solution usually contains benzalkonium chloride. If the solution is harsh, dilute it before using it otherwise you might end up with scars and scabs. Though alcohol can be used to cleanse new piercing, it is not recommended. Alcohol is harsh and tends to destroy the newly healing tissue.

Try to avoid wearing hoops or dangling earrings when you have a fresh piercing. These earings tend to get caught in clothes or towels etc. This could cause the piercing to get aggravated and will cause you a lot of unnecessary pain.

Since the wound is new, keep your hands away from it. If you need to touch your ear to remove or insert your earrings, wash your hands thoroughly. Make a cleansing ritual. Clean the wound thoroughly every day using an antiseptic cleansing lotion. Also, try to keep the area chemical free. Do not spray perfume near the new piercing and avoid hair gels or sprays that might come in contact with the wound.

If crusts are being formed on the jewellery that you wear in your ear, clean it using a clean piece of cotton soaked in a mild salt water solution. When you are applying the solution, rotate the jewellery carefully to clean it entirely. Do not remove the ear rings for some time after they have been inserted in your new piercing.

Even with all the care, it is possible that an infection might develop. In such an event, get it checked by a doctor. If there is pus or liquid oozing out, the doctor will give you antibiotics to prevent the infection from spreading.

Keep cleaning the piercing everyday and use an antibiotic ointment to keep it free from infection. If you are wearing jewellery, let it be in your ear so that you do not further hurt yourself by trying to take the jewellery out or re-insert it.
