Skin Healing Tips & Diet After Plastic Surgery

By Patricia | September 1, 2009

Bruising after plastic surgery is common. The skin beneath the area where the plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery has been done becomes tender and delicate. As a result, post-operative care is extremely important in order to ensure that the desired results of the plastic surgery are achieved.

Bruising And Skin Healing Tips

What can I do? There are several precautions that you can take after plastic surgery, depending on the kind of surgery done. For instance, if you underwent rhinoplasty, then you should be placed on an elevated bed in order to reduce the swelling. Also, it is important that you keep your nose and the surrounding areas clean to prevent infection. Keep in mind that the nasal bones have been reset, and so it is essential to be careful. Stay away from dust, pollen, or any other irritant. This is only one example; however, there are simple ways to take care of yourself after surgery, regardless of the type of surgery.

You should wear clean clothes and change your bed spread and pillow every day. It is important to use mild detergents when you wash them and ensure that they are rinsed well. For bathing, use a mild soap as prescribed by your dermatologist. Continue to use it to avoid any infection. Be careful to wash off shampoo well so that it does not come in contact with the affected area. Keep the scar clean, but do not overdo it and give it time for healing. Avoid all make up during this time if you have had a facial surgery as this could irritate the raw skin.

Sandalwood paste can be applied after 7 to 10 days of surgery. This helps to soothe the skin and heal the scar. Add rose water to the sandalwood powder to make the paste. Arnica is a popular medicine that is used to reduce pain, swelling and discoloration due to bruising. Its common names are mountain daisy and leopard’s bane. You can take arnica pills for effectual healing. It is particularly helpful in the case of plastic surgeries, and it should be taken both before and after the surgery.

Diet After Surgery

You could also take multivitamin supplements for about a month after your surgery. Make sure that you talk to your doctor before you start any treatment or decide to take any supplements. Vitamin tablets supply the needed nutrition for healing the wound and rebuilding tissue. Also ensure that your diet is rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C. Vitamin K is also good as it plays a vital role in blood clotting; foods rich in this vitamin include broccoli and kiwi. Avoid smoking, caffeine, and other drugs as these will hinder the healing process.
