Yoga Therapy for Weight Loss

Yoga therapy for weight loss consists, for the most part, of Yoga poses, breathing exercises and Yoga diet.



To shed weight, you don’t just rely on diets, or exercise programs that are too strenuous.



These are known to yield results; however, they do not keep you that way.



Oftentimes subsequent to sudden loss weight you may notice things like sagging skin and stretch marks. These will, evidently, make you feel even worse.

Hence, the best thing to do is to shed weight gradually but permanently. Yoga therapy offers excellent solutions to the problem of obesity. Yoga poses tone up the body in a homogeneous way. This is unlike any “weight loss programs" that claim to reduce your butt by so many inches and waist by so much, subsequently ending up in harmful side effects. Best of all, Yoga therapy can be administered for people of all ages and both sexes to keep the body slim and fit.

An overall plan for shedding weight naturally is:

Cleansing techniques: -

  • Basti (colon wash)
  • Kunjal Kriya (stomach cleansing)
  • Laghu Shanka Prakshalana (water laxative)

Yoga poses (Asanas) for shedding weight:

  • Surya – Namaskars – Sun Salutation (10 rounds)
  • Vrikshasana – Tree pose
  • Trikonasana – Triangle pose
  • Virasana – Hero pose
  • Salabhasana – Locust pose
  • Bhujangasana – Cobra pose
  • Ushtrasana -Camel pose
  • Pawanmuktasana – Wind relieving pose
  • Balasana – Child pose Half spinal twist
  • Bidalasana – Cat pose

Thos who wish to take one body part at a time, such as the hips or abdomen or thighs or arms or legs or chest are also welcome to do those Yoga poses specific to suit their requirements. These can either be done separately or incorporated in the above plan.

Exercises and Yoga poses to tighten up your abdomen are:

  • Abdominal lifts
  • Balasana – Child pose
  • Bhujangasana – Cobra pose
  • Pawanmuktasana – Wind relieving pose Half spinal twist
  • Naukasana – Boat pose

Yogic poses for your arms and legs:

  • Vrikshasana – Tree pose
  • Virasana – Hero pose
  • Urdhva Mukha Svanasana – Dog pose (face up)
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana – Dog pose (face down)
  • Padmasana – (Swinging) Lotus pose
  • Sethu Bandhasana – Bridge pose (face up)
  • Sethu Bandhasana – Bridge pose (face down)
  • Brahmacharyasana – Celibacy pose
  • Squat and rise pose.

Yoga poses to tighten your chest:

  • Trikonasana – Triangle pose
  • Virasana – Hero pose
  • Naukasana – oat pose (lying on your back)
  • Bhujangasana – Cobra pose
  • Pawanmuktasana – Wind relieving pose
  • Urdhva and Adho Mukha Svanasana – Dog pose (face up and down)
  • Chakrasana – Wheel pose
  • Ardha Matsyendrasana – Half Spinal Twist.

Exercises and Yoga poses to tone up your thighs and hips:

  • Surya Namaskar – Sun salutation
  • Virasana – Hero pose
  • Trikonasana – Triangle pose
  • Urdhva and Adho Mukha Svanasana – Dog pose (face up and down)
  • Pawanmuktasana – Wind relieving pose
  • Titali Asana – Butterfly pose.

Pranayama (breathing exercises) for weight loss:

  • Kapalabhatti
  • Anuloma-Viloma (Alternate nostril breathing)
  • Bhastrika (Bellows breathing)
  • Suryabhedana (Right nostril breathing)
