Yoga and Your Health – Fibromyalgia

Yoga and your health are complementary.

On the other hand, fibromyalgia is a disease. The word fibromyalgia is derived from the Latin fibro. It means connective tissue like tendons and ligaments. Myo means muscular. Algia means pain.

So fibromyalgia means pain in connective tissues like tendons and ligaments. It means people go through chronic pain in their muscles and joints.

The medical fraternity most often treats this chronic condition with anti-inflammatory drugs. These include tricyclic antidepressants, acetaminophen, non-narcotic analgesics, and / or anti-anxiety agents. Oftentimes, fibromyalgia pain causes depression and chronic fatigue.

Accompanied by this is an inability to function mentally at work, plus all other attendant consequences. In fact, the pain is known to leave the patient able to sleep just for a few hours at nights. None of the benefits of full, deep sleep to ease the mind.

Yoga therapy says, the first thing such a person should do is give them hugging types of poses. These include child's pose or half-child's pose. If the body is very tight, do egg balance and knee-to-chest pose while lying on back. But more than just hugs the body must feel the rhythmic or cyclical movements like gentle Sun-salutations. Start with just one or two rounds of and then follow up with a relaxing pose. Alternatively you can do restorative poses like the open butterfly pose (Supta Baddha Konasana).

The Sun-salutations sequence should be followed by a resting pose should be done a number of times in a row. Do it for about a ten to twenty minute routine. Follow this with 4 to 5 minutes of corpse pose (Shavasana). But do this open eyes kept (this is to ward off depression setting in and taking the sufferer on a dive downward). This will complete one overall session. Essentially, fibromyalgia suffers must avoid forward bends due to their downward energy (calming affect). However they can add backbends into their sequence. This again, depends on individual ability. You can add active backbends like cobra pose, camel pose, etc. during the heating portion of your routine. Do these while lying on a bolster in a passive backbend. This can be added during the restive portion.

Above all, Yoga therapy postulates that you remain motivated in your yoga practice. It is imperative that you follow how Yoga works on you together with a progressive Yoga schedule.
