Yoga and The Mind in Treating Bronchial Asthma

Yoga and the mind in treating Bronchial Asthma are interlinked.

For this reason, Yogis emphasizes an all-round personality development. This is at the physical, mental, intellectual, emotional and spiritual levels. By Yoga they mean a conscious effort towards self-perfection via development of all human potentialities latent in a person.

It is by such a process that human weaknesses and deficiencies can be cleansed, thus resulting in a Superhuman race.

Control of the mind in treating Bronchial Asthma involves two aspects. First is the ability to concentrate on any subject or object. Second is the capacity to be quiet at any time.

Most people have been developing the first aspect viz., concentration. Seldom has man’s second capacity i.e., to remain calm and quiet been harnessed. For this reason, Yoga stresses upon this second aspect. Yoga has skilful ways of calming down the mind. It is called “Upayah” a technique. However, it is not a brutal, mechanical gross effort to stop one’s thoughts. The co-relation between mind and body being what it is, once the mind is calmed, so is the body and the respiratory tract. Hence, the long-term benefits in healing Bronchial Asthma.

An amateurish person who tries to repair a T.V. is almost certainly going to ruin it. On the other hand, an experienced and skilful technician or engineer knows precisely what to lay hands on and how to rectify the problem. This is because he operates from the right space. The answer is: “knowledge is the key”.

Similarly, in Bronchial Asthma, in controlling the mind, a beginner may try hard. In the process he gets disgusted finding himself more 'messed up'. This is where Yoga therapy helps. It gives us the techniques necessary to operate in the right space at the right time for total mastery. This adeptness is a way of calming down the mind, without the use of brutal force to harness it.
