Yoga Tree Pose

The yoga Tree Pose is known as Vrikshasana. Vriksh is the Sanskrit word for tree.

And the posture, when done correctly, makes the practitioner look like a tree, thus, the name.

  • First, get into Tadasana or the Mountain Pose. Then, lightly, move your weight to the left foot while you keep that foot firmly on the floor. Bend your right knee. Then with your right hand, clasp the right ankle.
  • Move your right foot upwards and keep the sole on the left inner thigh. If you can, then press the right heel in the inner left groin with the toes pointing to the floor. The central part of the pelvis should be over the left foot.
  • Then place your hands on the pelvis and ensure that the pelvis is positioned neutrally.
  • Lengthen the tailbone. The sole of the right foot should be pressed firmly against the inner thigh. Then, resist with the left outer leg. Bring your hands together in Anjali Mudra. Gaze at a point on the floor.
  • Stay in the position for a few seconds or a minute. Do the same positions with the legs reversed.

Caution: You may want to avoid this posture if your have low blood pressure, insomnia and headache. And if you have high blood pressure, then make sure that you do not raie your arms overhead.

Props: If you want some more support while doing this pose, then you can stand against a wall and do the posture. This will give you back support.
