We are all aware of the tremendous benefits of yoga for adults, but have you ever considered yoga classes for kids? Yoga is one of the best and most non strenuous fitness disciplines that has tremendous benefits for kids.

Children in fact stand to gain a lot more from yoga as it nourishes them at this most crucial period when they are shaping into the adults of the future. It helps them maintain their balance and achieve their full potential against all odds.

It also helps children to remain level headed and focused in the face of peer pressure and other challenges that can so often overwhelm not just young minds, but even us adults.  All of these non physical benefits are particularly important for children.

It’s important that you keep in mind however, that not every discipline of yoga is suitable, as some disciplines require extremely strenuous routines that a child should not be subjected to.

The connection between yoga and kids is unfortunately one that has been ignored for too long, but has finally started to gain recognition, with a number of kids yoga classes mushrooming. Programs created with children as the focus employ the gentler poses and breath techniques that from a variety of yoga disciplines. These activities are extremely rewarding for kids as they create awareness among kids about their own potential. This is particularly important for self conscious kids and those lacking in confidence or self esteem.

Yoga offers kids with a wholesome routine that works on every aspect of their being – physical, mental health, general health, and on any existing illness or condition. Yoga helps children maintain healthy bodies and also builds up immunity. Again, not all yoga is suited for kids suffering from certain conditions, disabilities or ailments, and in these cases they would need specialized yoga sessions, to address these concerns. Always inform the kids yoga teacher about the presence of pre-existing conditions for advice and information on specialized yoga centers. In such circumstances however, always consult your health care provider before enrolling your child in any activity.

While the general health benefits and psychological benefits of kids yoga classes may be more obvious in children with no health concerns, they are subtle and a lot more valuable in children afflicted with ailments like Down Syndrome or Cerebral Palsy. In such situations yoga may be the only chance at a normal life, as it helps these kids cope with and overcome their disabilities as far as possible.
